Sam

Tissue Donor

Sam was just an absolute light – he loved to make people laugh, smile, and helped them to feel good about themselves. In his younger years, he played travel hockey and met so many incredible people that just helped him grow and flourish. School was very tough for him, so he struggled with self-esteem and confidence at times. Hockey helped him push through all of that. He and I had such a wonderful relationship – I was his Mama Bear. Sam would call me every day, tell me every single detail of a connection he made, or an incredible conversation he had with a stranger. They were always the most heartwarming stories and he could truly make a friend with anyone.

When Sam passed on July 27, 2024 – I never ever imagined that heartbreaking day would come, no one really does – however, as the initial reality set in and in the wee hours of that morning, I received a call telling me Sam was a donor and his eye tissues were viable, and needed. My heart just filled with so much love – that boy – he’d give the shirt off his back for anyone, and to think, that he could help someone’s eyesight, so incredibly precious. He did tell me awhile ago how important it was for him to be a donor, that incredible gift to help others. I’m not sure if his tissues went to just one person or two, I think just one.

I was aware of tissue donation, only from my brother who received eye tissue as well a few years back. I will say, however, that I never really thought much about it or even the impact it has until going through it personally. It truly is an overwhelming experience, but in a good way. I strongly encourage all to be a donor, it truly is such an incredible gift for those who are in need.

My hope is to meet the person who received Sam’s tissues… I just want ask, did you start seeing crazy things, lol? Because of Sam’s incredible outlook on life, he lived life to the fullest – full of love! Plus, I just want to hug the person because they have a piece of my heart that I will forever treasure!
